I am currently doing a PhD at the University of Southampton. I am a member of the ISIS research group, a part of the School of Electronics & Computer Science.
My research is aimed at using image processing techniques, specifically shape description, coupled with spatial statistical methods, to explore the covariate structure of spatiotemporal signals. By spatiotemporal signals, we mean something that varies in both space and time. For this research my study phenomenon is influenza, which we can approximate through the surveillance of people who exhibit influenza symptoms.
Shape description aims to fully describe a shape by a set of numbers. These numbers aim to measure the spatial distribution of the pixels that are connected together, i.e. pixels of the same intensity. The accuracy of a particular shape description method can be determined by how faithfully the original shape can be reconstructed.
I haven't yet outlined exactly what I want to say about my research here, for the moment I'm just posting about my PhD in my blog.
